4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 86 Bronco floor shifter stuck in N, dana 44 front, borg warner 1356

Question
Carl,

It was Icy the other day and I put my 86 Bronco in 4hi with no problem, ran my errands and came back. Later that day it was much worse outside, iced over everywhere. I Pulled the floor shifter back to 4lo and it clicked into N and then the shifter become completely disengaged. It now moves all the way forward and back with no result. The bolt was pretty loose that hold the shifter into the tcase to a tightened that down, but that did not change anything. I have tried putting the bronco into D,1, R, P, and then back into N to try and move the shifter again but it still feels like its connected to nothing. Its an automatic with 302 EFI, not sure exactly what kind of tcase is in there. I have no idea what could have happened or where to go from here.

Answer
Andy,
It sounds like the linkage came loose or broke.  When the bolt for the linkage came loose, it may have let some other part of the linkage break.  See if you can find a repair manual at a local parts store.  They are quite reasonable, around $20, and are great for tracing these types of problems.  The main reason I think that something in the linkage broke, is that the shift lever is so floppy.

It should have a NP208, or a borg warner 1356 or 1357.  There should be a tag on the rear of the t-case that will tell you.  You also should have a dana 44 front end and a ford 8.8" rear, with 3.55 gears.  There is a possibility of 4.10 gears, but not many had them with the 302.  If you only have 3 forward gears D,2,1 then the tranny is a c6 but if you have an overdrive as well then it's an AOD. All very good parts and will hold up to quite a bit if taken care of.  Full size broncs share all the same parts as an f150 if you need parts and have a hard time finding them. Hope to have helped.
