4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 4 wheel drive problem, vacuum problem, reputable shop

Question
I had a new transmission installed in my 2002 jeep liberty 40,000 miles and now my 4 wheel drive does not work - first time I tried to use it.

Answer
Elizabeth,

This is a function of the transfer case and front differential.  I would take it to a reputable shop, (or dealer if it's still under warranty) and have it checked out.  Some of the Jeeps have a unit in the front differential that engages when the transfer case is put into 4-wheel drive.  If this unit is not functioning, the the front end will not engage.

This could be a linkage, electrical or vacuum problem.  If not, then you may have an internal part faulty or broken.
