4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: rear brakes & 4 wheel drive, jeep cherokee sport, jeep cherokee

Question
Hi I just bought a 96' jeep cherokee sport w/195,000 mileage....just put plates on and went on some back roads to test 4x4...put truck in 4H drove fwrd & bkwrd then N then tried to put back in 4H-i think what I did was not fully put lever in 4H possition & it ground a little but anyway-to the main problem-while the truck was was in N (gear selector-not 4 wheel drive selevtor) my foot was on brake-suddenly.the brake peddle went to the floor-and "brake" idiot light came on   so got 4H back into 2H again and put gear selector back into drive & tried pumping brakes and had very little-mind you it didn't leave me stranded with NO brakes just very little....managed to get her back home-first thing I did was check underneith didn't see much but noticed some oil slatter on inside of tires(it had been raining but water doesnt look the same as oil)got piece of plastic out & got underneith it-mounted on left side of frame approx. A foot from rear axle there is oil spray marks on frame down the ebrake line (I think it is anyway) and my question is-what EXACTLY let go?? AND was it the 4x4 that caused this from blowing???? Maybe it was just coincidence but would like to be sure-also-what is going to need to be replaced-and is this going to be an expen$ive fix???? Thanks steve

Answer
Steve, I am sure that the 4x4 didnt cause this problem, it sounds like you either have a brake hose, or a brake line leaking, Open the hood put some more brake fluid in , and than have someone pump the brakes to detrmine where the leak is really at, thanks Adam
