4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: Ignition Module or PCM, 2005 ford escape, knucklebusters

Question
QUESTION: Car 2005 Ford Escape 6 cyl 3.0
History: the car simply stopped yesterday. I shut it off, and restarted it, it ran, however roughly. I had replaced one ignition coil about a year or so ago. it felt like the same thing. i took the car to Autozone and got a reading and indeed it came up as coil 4. I had my mechanic replace it as well as the 6 spark plugs while he was in there. But, the problem persists.

I took it BACK to auto zone and now the code says all three front coils are gone (6,5,and 4) now my mechanic says it may be the ignition module OR PCM, both of which are really expensive for me. Ford charges like 80 or 100 dollars JUST for a readout, and they say the PCM could be 1,000. are there any third party PCM's, or do i have to buy from Ford and what if its the ignition module, is there anyway to find out for sure, Ive read online it could be a number of things, some of which are not so expensive. any advise at all??

ANSWER: Robert, it could be the pcm, but I have seen all three coils go bad too, if it says # 4 is bad and you just replaced that one take it back to auto zone get a new one and put it in cyl 5 or 6 and see if that fixes one of those codes. oh and yes you can get a used computer go to www.car-part.com and you can type in your vehicle info and it will find you a used one, sorry I cant be of more help , if it was at our shop we could fix it thanks ADAM

QUESTION: ADAM, where is YOUR shop!, and assuming your too far (Im in MASS) what TYPE of shop should i be looking for that could do this work, other than Ford. As a side note i have this info on the PCM, Ford part number 5L8Z*12A650*LH

Description is called module. Ford list price $745.99

they also say it has to be programmed and installed $300.00

I got a reply from Knucklebusters? and he says 190.00 and hes got a match 5L8A-12A650-LH

Ford says it has to be programmed, if I buy used will it already be programmed?

also the ignition coil of 87.50 does not? have to be programmed. 300 dollars labor and I'm unable to find out where the rigging thing is!! do i need to buy a Ford Manual?

thanks!

Answer
The ign coil does not need to be progammed , the only thing that would need to be is the pcm , If you find an exact match it may not need to be reprogamed though , alot of the times a ford dealership will just start hanging parts on untill they get the problem solved at your expense which isnt the right answer.
