Tractor Repair: International 1066 Power Steering, flow control valve, international 1066

Question
Mr. Jossie,

I have a International 1066 that has weak or no power steering. I found a leak at the front Hydraulic pump.

About 1 year ago I had the multiple valve rebuilt, and the power steering pump rebuilt.

The question I have is...how do you take off the "front hydraulic pump" the right way? Is it a straight forward procedure of just un-bolting the pump? Also is there anything to line up when I re-install the hydraulic pump?

Thanks,
Malcolm

Answer
The front pump is for the steering, TA, and brakes, and is mounted to the inside of the multiple control valve.  The multiple control valve (MCV) must be removed to get to the pump, so I'm not sure how you know it is leaking because you can't see it, unless you have the multiple control valve removed already.  There are four bolts that hold the pump onto the MCV, and there is nothing to line up when installing it.  New MCV gaskets and o-rings will have to be installed when assembling everything.  It would be strange for the pump to fail already if it was fixed a year ago.  There is also a power steering relief valve and flow control valve (steering priority valve) in the MCV that can affect the steering.  A blown gasket or o-ring, or a sticking relief valve, flow control valve, or sump check valve can cause weak steering as well as a bad pump.
