4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: carburetor stalling, fuel pressure regulator, willys jeep

Question
Hi Matt. I hope you can help.  I have a '50 Willys Jeep with a 225 V6 and 2 BBL carburetor.  When I start climbing hills, it starts to stall.  It is flooding, not being fuel starved.  I have searched on the Internet, and asked around. Some things I have tried include bending the float down so not as much gas goes into the bowl, and that definitely helped, but it still happens.  Someone suggested putting in an inline fuel pressure regulator, and turning down the pressure when I go offroad, then back up when I get back on the street.  I do not want to go with EFI.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. R.J.

Answer
It is all in the configuration and which way the carb is turned in the intake. What is happening is the gas in the bowl is running out of the vent on the top of the carb and flooding the engine out. Holly makes extreme angle carbs that the vent tubes are connected to stop this and maybe kits to sop it for your carb but may need to be updated to a carb to better suit your driving habits to totally fix the problem. The fact that bending the float helped lets me know the gas is junning in insted of being sucked in as needed..
