4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 97 zj rear axle bearing, lincoln town car, rear axle

Question
my 75 year old father parked his lincoln town car and  recently purchased his first jeep. a 97 zj. he is trying to replace the rear axle bearing and is getting a bit frustrated. He is having trouble removing it. He got the tool from autozone and purchased a manual but is now having trouble with some type of pins or clips. Can you make any suggestions? Is there any other problems you see he may have with that? he is itching to go play off road. thanks

Answer
inside the differential there is a carrier(has a big gear attatched to it looks like a ring) in the center there is a 1 inch thick pin that goeas all the way through it. on one side there is a little bolt hoding it in from the side. Remove this bolt and the pin will slide out with your fingers. Once the pin is out, push in on the axle from the wheel and then go back to the carrier. take a pen magnetand you will see a thick "c" clip on the axle end, use the magnet to pull it off. Then go back to the wheel end of the axle and pull it out of the housing

Hope this helps
