4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 1989 Cherokee clutch adjustment, clutch linkage, clutch disk

Question
Good day, Carl.

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee (4.0L, 5MT). The clutch on this jeep engages WAY out off the floor. So far out it is tricky to drive sometimes. The actual range to disengage is only a few inches from when I push in the clutch, then there are several more inches to the floor. Can this be adjusted?

Thank you.

Answer
Rob,

This Jeep should have a hydraulic clutch linkage, and is not adjustable.  It sounds like your clutch disk, and/or your pressure plate are worn out.  If this is the case, they should be replaced, and at the same time, the throw out bearing should be replaced also.

I would have it checked out by a reputable transmission shop.  If it gets too worn, it will start slipping.
