4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 4 wheel drive, transmission shop, spring breaks

Question
I have a 1995 Nissan 4 wheel drive that keeps jumping out of 4 wheel drive or wont lock in sometimes .What could be my problem

Answer
Roy,

Most transfer cases have a spring loaded ball that rides in a detent on the shifting forks in the case.  If this spring breaks, or the forks get bent, then the linkage can't hold the gears in place.  Worn or broken gears can do the same thing.

I would take the rig into a reputable transmission shop (preferably one that specialize in 4-wheel drives), and have them check the transfer case.
