4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 4WD High/Low Lights Blinking, transfer case, troubleshooting guide

When I got into my 1998 Mountaineer the other day and started it up I saw that my 4WD High and 4WD Low lights would blink six times and then stop. They would blink again a few minutes later and continue to blink six times and turn off until I turned off the car. I leave the 4WD knob in auto and haven't really messed with high or low so I'm a little lost. Ideas?

I'm not familiar with which transfer case you have, but it sounds like you may have a bad ground, or a failure in the transfer case linkage.  I would purchase a repair manual for it, and see if it mentions this problem in the troubleshooting guide.

Since it blinks a specified amount of times, and repeats, this could be a built in code to notify you of a problem with the transfer case, or linkage.
