4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 1997 ford explorer xl, radio antennae, noise problem


Question
Two questions: One, the 4wd light flashes periodically then goes away. 4wd works fine, is there something that needs serviced?

two; how can i improve am reception? when i hit the accelerator the buzz in the radio is evident.

The first thing that I would suggest, would be a complete tune up.  Many times the buzz in the radio is improperly gapped, or worn spark plugs.  An additional ground from the motor to the frame can help in some situations.  

Check the radio antennae, and make sure that it is plugged into the radio tight, and check the antennae to see if it is mounted tightly to the body.  If it is coming loose, this will cause a faulty ground, and can cause noise.

The problem with the 4wd light could be a bad ground, or faulty 4wd switch on the transfer case.  This may tie into your noise problem.  I would check the wiring leading to the transfer case, and see if you can find a loose connection, or broken wire.
