4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 99 Toyota 4Runner drive line., toyota 4runner, happy holidays

Question
Mr. Ford,
When my car downshifts into first gear, just before it comes to a stop, I can here it.  This may sound silly but the downshift was never noticeable before.
At oil change I lube the U-Joints and this seems to stop the noise for a while but it comes back.  The car has 116,500 miles on it and runs great otherwise.  I have taken good care of this car, believe me, with only Toyota mechanics doing the work.  The transmission gets power flushed every 25,000 miles.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Even though I am not a mechanic it sounds to me like your U-Joints may be worn.  They are like any mechanical item susceptible to wear.  I would have your Toyota mechanic check them when you get your next service.  They are not normally too expensive but get a lot of wear and tear.  Best of luck and Happy Holidays to you and yours.  Bud
