Lately I've noticed a strange high pitched screaming noise coming from under the hood.  Could it be the water pump or the serpentine belt? I can see cracks in the serpentiine belt. Or the water pump...

Usually the water pump makes a growling sound when it starts to go bad.  They usually start to leak, also.

I would suspect that your serpentine belt is slipping due to age, or is a little loose, and needs tightening.  The adjustment should be on the power steering pump.
