4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: steering will not return to center posistion, jeep wrangler, alignment shop

Question
I have a 1988 Jeep Wrangler with 111K miles. After I complete a turn the steering wheel will not return to the center postion, I have to manually turn the steering wheel back to go straight after I turn. This Jeep has power steering. The belt is new, the pump does not leak fluid or make any noises. The Jeep drove fine to work, then had this problem when I drove home that afternoon.  Any suggestions on how to localize this problem     Thanks,  Dan N

Answer
Dan,

It sounds like you have a valve problem in your steering box, or power steering pump.  Another item that could cause this would be a bent, or worn out steering component, such as a ball joint, or steering stabilizer.  I would take the Jeep to a reputable front end shop/alignment shop, and have them check it out.
