4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: ball joints

Question
Trying to find out if it is possible to change out upper ball joint without removing lower ball? I have new ball joints but 1 upper has gone bad & would rather be able to swap just upper but all my knowledge leads to having to do both upper & lower.
Any response would be grateful.

Answer
B,

If you are changing one, you should change both.  If the lower ball joint is starting to wear, a new upper can put more stress on it, and it will have to be replaced soon anyway.  It's much easier to do both while you have the tools out and ready to do the work. It's a good chance that the lower is ready to go anyway as it has had the same wear as the upper.

This will insure that you wont have any premature failures in the one you didn't replace.
