Jeep: frost plugs, frost plugs, jeep cherokee

Question

Answer
Michael,

I'm assuming you mean 'freeze' plugs, which are for protecting the block from freeze expansion of an improper or diluted coolant mix. If you don't have the intake and exhaust manifolds out of the way, you need to do that before hand. Sure, you can try and cheat it, but they almost never drive in straight.

I'm also assuming you have the tools as well. There are freeze plugs drivers, which look very similar to bushing drivers (they can actually be used). Most times, freeze plug drivers come with a fancy angled handle to help in situations where a straight shot is impossible. If you have the tools, and a relatively straight shot, then drive it home. I use the deep set aftermarket freeze plugs, since the factory ones tend to be very slim, and easy to overpower, or drive in crooked -- resulting in leaks. I also use a bit of aviation sealer (brown gooey stuff) to help the initial sealing, but it doesn't prevent them blowing out if conditions warrant it. Other than that, they can be a bit finicky, but you should be good to go. One thing: when in doubt, punch it out (and install a new one). Doing the job a first time is a bit of a drag, but doing it second really stinks. Good Luck!
