Jeep: Voltmeter, jeep grand cherokee, jeep cj 5

Question
I own a 6 cylinder '97 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I am experiencing an intermittent problem. While driving 'Check Gauges' is displayed on the instrument panel and the voltmeter is pegged to the high end of positive. If I continue driving it will usually go back to normal within 10 minutes or if I shut the car off and start it up again everthing will be fine. I read the answer to a similar problem with a '80 Jeep CJ-5. Sounds the same and if it is where is the I.V.R. located?

Thanks,
Bob S.

Answer
The IVR is the internal voltage regulator and for older vehicle it is in the alternator. However I believe that voltage for your vehicle is regulated by the PCM (vehicles computer).Your best bet is to get the vehicle looked at by a tech to confim the cause of this
