I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Limited and there is a loud hum from the front left side.  It seems to be worse at about 60 MPH.  Could it be a u-joint?  Bearings?  What other info do you need?  By the way it has 121145 miles on it.

Thanks,

Mike

If you turn your wheel does the hum go away? If so I would say hub and bearing assy. has had it. U joints make a tinny rattle.

Kelly,
The noise is there even when I turn the wheels.  It is at higher speeds not when turning onto another road or something like that.  You were right about the u-joint.  I had already replaced it by the time I got this e-mail.  I will be replacing the hub today and I will let you know.

Thanks again,

Mike

Answer
Do you have a full sized spare wheel?? Might be a good time to put that on the vehicle and rule out a bad tire.
When you get the hub assy out you should be able to feel if it is good or not. The new one will be very smooth when rotating by hand the worn one will feel rough. Hope all goes well.
