Jeep: 96 Cherokee wont start, jeep cherokee, dead battery

Question
When I turn the key in my 1996 Jeep Cherokee nothing happens.  I tried jump starting the Jeep and was able to get it started by giving it gas as it was cranking.  As long as I kept the engine revved, it would continue to run, but if I took my foot off the gas, the Jeep would die again.  Any ideas?

Answer
Several possibilities come to mind. The first being you have a dead battery. Try replacing the battery and see if that does not solve the problem.  Have the alternator checked while you are at it. The best way to narrow it down would be to hook the Jeep to a code reader and see what default codes are being generated and go from there.
