Suzuki: Suzuki Escudo 96 Model - automatic free hub, auto hubs, wheel hubs

Question
Hello,

I have a '96 model 'escudo' that i believe is the same as the 'sidekick' in the US and the 'Vitara' in Australia.  The 4wd function has stopped working.  It has automatic free hubs meaning that you just need to shift it into 4wd high or low to engage 4wd.  Problem is that it has stopped working.  Any tips?  Is it likely to be the free hubs is could i have damage something in the else?

Regards,
Peter

Answer
You need to be able to determine whether the hubs, which are functionally actuated by the transfer case engaging 4wd and thereby rotating the front drive parts, are actually engaging.  ALL the hubs do is connect the front drive axles to the hubs, and transfer power to the wheels themselves.

The most reliable way I have found is to jack up the front and rear and rest both ends on jackstands, and then, after selecting 4wd, to look under the vehicle and see if the front driveshaft and the axles from the differential to the wheels are turning.  At that point, the hubs should engage.  If you stop the engine at that point, and check with the vehicle in 4wd and in gear, (or "park" if it's an automatic) turning a front wheel should rotate the axle, and cause the opposite wheel to rotate the opposite direction.  If the axles turn, and the wheel/hubs are not engaged, it's the hubs.

Consult a service manual, and the dealership parts department.  Most auto hubs have "brake bands/clutches" that are usually available as a service kit/repair kit.
