Suzuki: steering, giant tires, steering pumps

hi"iv just got a 1995 1.6 vitara"its been modified lift kit big wheels ect..but the steering is stiff as hell..it was stood for awhile"and the fluid was low but not empty...iv toped it up and rocked the steering side to side with no joy.....

while it's running, look in the reservoir.  There should be some evidence the fluid is circulating, as compared to when it's sitting still.

Generally the steering box is bulletproof, but steering pumps (that's what the reservoir supplies with fluid) have been known to go out.

Another possible issue is that with giant tires, the pump just doesn't supply enough pressure and volume, as is the case with my samurai (with a sidekick pump and box)  The pump is a little weak when just standing still, but is adequate when moving, even slowly.
