QuestionI have experienced loss of power especially going up hill, and my mpg have gone down considerably. I am needing a place to start to troubleshoot this problem. I have taken it to a shop and they replaced the egr solenoid and overhauled the carburetor. I had this problem before the fixes.
AnswerAssume nothing and treat this problem as if it were someone else's vehicle.
Check the valve adjustment, compression spark plugs. wires, cap, rotor, etc and determine that the motor is sound first.
It has to be either mechanical, fuel or ignition. Carefully and methodically eliminate mechanical, then electrical, and only because carburetors can be really hard unless you know theory and application of carbs and fuel and emissions systems quite well.
if you have access to tools, and want to read online, and get educated, fine.
if you check, your state may have laws and regulations that require repairs based upon a diagnosis to actually fix the problem. Go to IATN.net and use the shopfinder on the first page to find someone in your area, and discuss your issues, and see if you and the tech can agree on how much the diagnosis will cost, and what if an attempt to repair doesn't fix the problem.....
