Suzuki: Susuki sj410 fuel problem, vacuum leak, suzuki sj410

Question
Hi david,

My 1984 Suzuki sj410 is on an island so it's up to me alone to fix it. It has been run by someone else for years with the fuel gage on close to empty because kids would steal the fuel. It starts once but stalls out after 30 seconds and then will not start.

I've replaced

oil, oil filter ,gas filter ,plugs ,cap ,wires ,roter.

I think a possibility could be some rust or junk is stuck in the fuel system.

Any suggestions on a next move to fix this problem.

Thanks

Stig

Answer
Junk in the fuel tank is a good possibility, and the tank is rather easy to remove, it's just held in by bolts around the perimeter.  Crank the engine, and see if there's vacuum at the fuel pump inlet, and pressure at the outlet.  it's also easily possible that the hoses from the tank to the pump could be old and porous, and since the pump needs to lift the fuel about a foot, and vacuum leak would prevent fuel from getting to the tank.
