Tips on Buying Cars: Buying my fist car, vehicle history report, nissan nx

Question
hello,
i've ben offered a car from a friend for $2,500 AUD.
its the NISSAN NX-r Coupe 1992 [or 1993 i cant remember]
It has done 200,000km roughly.
Is the price good and will the mileage have any effect?
it is going to be my first car so it it fine for that?
Thanks for your time
Regards,
Chris

Answer
With the age and mileage I would try to get a lower price... or try to find another car. It also really depends on the condition of the car. If it is only in decent shape, then I suggest perhaps finding a slightly newer better conditioned car if possible. Check around locally and online for other cars that fit your price range. I'm not entirely sure of every vehicle you have in AU but you may be better off with a 95 civic with ~150000kms or less if you can find one for that price. If the NX is in good condition, looks to be well maintained, and you really like the car.... 2200-2300 AUD would be fair. Just know that any car that old will have problems... so be sure to get it checked out by a mechanic so you don't get any surprises.

You can check out these sites for a little more info on buying a used car:

to check resale: kbb.com
carfax.com (not sure if that works for AU cars)

Get a carfax or similar vehicle history report too... make sure it wasn't wrecked or flooded.

to shop for local cars you can use the AU version of autotrader... I'm not sure what that is.. but Google "used car shopping" and you can find it. (i only get the US results here)
