Tips on Buying Cars: documentation of new car order, mazda mx 5, thanks in advance

Question
I recently put down a deposit on a 2008 Mazda MX-5 with a power retractable hard top. No dealer in my area has one on the lot so I had to order one. I am not happy with the paper work I was sent home with, two different pages, one detailing the car's specs and another outlining the agreed upon price which I signed but the dealer did not. My question is exactly what documentation should I expect from the dealer to protect myself from any surprises when the car arrives. Thanks in advance.

Answer
There should be an order confirmation between the dealer and Mazda, detailing exactly how the car was ordered.  When I was selling, we'd have the customer initial this confirmation, with the notation that both parties (dealer and customer) agreed this was how the car was to be built.

As for the purchase order (the one with the price), I'd be a little concerned.  If an authorized representative of the dealership (usually the sales manager) didn't sign it, then you really don't have an agreement on price.  In fact, I'll bet if you read all of it (front and back), there's probably a line or a clause that states the contract is not binding until signed by an authorized representative of the dealership.  Which means they can ask for more money once the car arrives on their lot.  I'd go back and get it signed by a manager, or demand your deposit be returned and head for another dealer.
