Tips on Buying Cars: Changing names on license plates, brick wall, changing names

Question
A couple of months ago, my girlfriend had me to be co-owners of a vehicle. Now I understand that in order to get me off the loan, she would have to refinance the vehicle. But she is getting Moving Violation and Parking tickets and they are coming in my name on each ticket. how can i get my name off the license plate so she is reponsible for the ticket even though I don't drive the car??

Thank you
Don

Answer
Most banks require that any name on the registration and/or title must also be listed as a co-signer on the loan.  That way, if the bank ever had to repossess, the registrant couldn't stand in the way.  I know of no bank that will just drop a name off a contract so that you can avoid these problems with tickets.  And why would the bank?  Right now, they have two people they can go after for payment- if they let you drop off, then they only have one.  Which is why you'd have to refinance the loan in order to get your name off the contract.  You can try to work this out with the bank, but you're probably going up against a brick wall on this one.

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just telling you the way it is.  Banks are pretty good at protecting their own interest.
