Tips on Buying Cars: After-sale paint conditioner, paint protection system, ford mustang convertible

Question
We are purchasing a 2007 Ford Mustang convertible and of course the dealer is trying to "rust&dust" us on after market paint protection products.  The product being offered is through ECP-The Protector offering a 10 year warranty on paint finish (DuPont PTFE-Paint Protection System) and fabric at a cost of $399.  Needless to say very skeptical of these after-market products and the need in comparison with the factory warranty.  Any input would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Tara,

I do believe in these paint protection products/warranties. I'm not familiar with the one in question, as I use Simoniz System 5. It is a DuPont Teflon paint sealant. It's probably not a bad product being offered, but I wouldn't pay more than $250. If you decide to do it, first I'd tell them that you're interested in having it done. I'd let them get excited, then I'd tell them that you WILL NOT pay more than $250 for it. They will ULTIMATELY say OK, if not at first. Good luck!
