The fact you have a credit card which is not maxed out tells me your credit is not as bad as you may think...
As for Buy or Lease...
Stay away from lease when its an older used car...the interest rate is much to high...
As for the vehicles you mentioned i would rate Geo and Kia as my first choices providing the Kia is no older than a 2000 model...
My specialty is really the process you getting value for your money...
Have you been to a dealer yet ?
Have you checked with your bank as to get a loan ?
