Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a used car, mile warranty, model condition

Question
I want to buy an automobile (2000-2003),the most frugal way possibly, either by take over payment or buying from a car lot.  If I buy from a car lot, I may have some money to put down but most of it has to be financed.

Any suggestions that will help with getting the best deals or keeping cost down as much as possible will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Thanks Sallie for the question.  As I do not know what your budget is you will have to temper your decision if what I suggest proves to be too expensive.  Many of the major manufacturers, if not most, offer what they call a certified pre-owned program.  They do this for several reasons but the main one is that they need to dispose of units that have been leased.  This program offers many advantages including a great warranty, normally 100,000 miles, good financing and peace of mind.  BUT, you pay for it.  If you think you can afford the monthly cost you should check this out.  Remember the 100,000 mile warranty is total miles, not after you buy the car.  Price will be determined by the make, model, condition, mileage of the vehicle you choose.  There can be several thousand dollars between an older domestic and the same year Toyota or Honda but since you are getting the same warranty and condition it may behoove you to check the domestics.  If you have further specific questions please let me know.  Another advantage to these certified programs is they will let you buy with small down payments if your credit is good.  In any case, best of luck to you.  Bud
