Tips on Buying Cars: Engines on used cars, grand am gt, older cars

Question
I'm buying my first car, and I'm buying it used. I found a 95 Grand Am with a 4 cylinder engine. It seemed in good condition with 53,000 miles. I went and looked at a Grand Am GT and the guy selling that, who claimed to know a lot about cars, told me to never buy a Grand Am 4 cylinder because the engine could go at anytime. Is this true? Is it safe to buy a 4 cylinder or will I be more likely to have more problems sooner? I'm not sure if you can answer this question or not... but I thought maybe you might have experience with older cars with four cylinders. Thanks if you can help, and thanks anyway if you can't.

Answer
Hi Nichole
The guy selling the GT is right...its a known fact the 4 cyl GR AM's had many engine problems...while the 6 cyl was well made...
dont miss-understand my answer most other 4 cyl cars are valid buys in that price range...Sunfires...Cavaliers...Saturn's etc...
