Tips on Buying Cars: New Car Undercoating, car undercoating, roadsalt

Question
We just purchased a 2004 honda civic EX. We don't have a garage, & live in upper NYS with lots of snow & roadsalt. Since we keep our cars forever, should we have it undercoated? If so, is there a preferable type of undercoating? Honda offered to have it done for ab. $300.
There doesn't seem to be anything in Consumers on the subject, I would appreciate any info you have.

Answer
Wow JM, this is an interesting question.  I have not heard of undercoating in at least 25 years.  Showed my age there didnt I?  Undercoating is a petroleum product that is much like the asphalt used on highways.  My understanding is that it is not needed anymore since the frame and exposed parts are coated during the assembly project.  If you are willing to pay your Honda dealer $300.00 I would want complete specs, installation, warranty and other germaine information.  I am not sure that this would not be against EPA rules.  Let me know what you decide.  Bud
