Tips on Buying Cars: fair price for demo with 5000 miles, demo, good deal

Question
Am looking at 2009 Toyota Highlander Hybrid demo 5000 miles, loaded MSRP $48,124  dealer is offering $43,605 including installation of XM receiver.  Good deal?  I live in upstate NY

Answer
Karen,

According to Edmunds TMV, this is about what others are paying for a non-demo vehicle. Buying a demo vehicle can be a great deal, but not when the price is so close to a new one. I am stating this while assuming this price does not include TT&L; am I correct? I would advise you to give the dealer another chance. 5000 miles is not a few trips around the block. Aim for an additional $1000 to $1500, and then get some quotes from other dealers if you can't get it. Also, find out if the demo has been RDR'd to the manufacturer. If it has, the warranty may have started when the demo was first put in use, potentially knocking priceless time from your warranty coverage. (You're already losing mileage). Don't assume anything, just verify the "in-service date" and the date the warranty started.
