Toyota Repair: idle when clutch is depressed, toyota celica, vacuum hose

Question
Hi Ted,
I recently just put a new engine in my car its the same engine as the old one. i have a 1989 toyota celica. When ever i press the clutch the RPMs do not go down and some times it even goes up to 2000rpm. I am just wondering whats wrong and how it can get fixed

Answer
The most common cause is that there is an intake air leak, most likely the rubber intake hose from the air cleaner to the throttle body has some cracks or loose clamps, before I go on to list all of the other but less likely possibilities check for an air leak on the intake side or a vacuum hose that may be off.
