Tips on Buying Cars: Dealer refuses to void contract, dmv office, posession

Question
I recently signed all papers to purchase a used vehicle in the state of PA. The next morning I realized I cannot afford the insurance for this purchase. I never took possession of the vehicle. When i called that day the dealer said he would not let me out of the contract. They were contacted by my lawyer but so far they have not let me out of the deal. Do they have the right to make me take the vehicle?

Answer
Shannon,

Thanks for your question.  My understanding of the PA laws is that if you have never taken posession of the vehicle, then you are not considered the legal owner until you take posession of that vehicle.  In order to make sure that this is the law, call your local DMV office and they will be able to answer that question.  If your lawyer has contacted them, and they are still not willing to release you from the contract, then the law might be different.  Ask your lawyer, and they should be able to answer that question as well.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
