QuestionQUESTION: When it the best time to sell/trade a car to get the most out of your trade and purchase.
I have a 2003 mazda protege 66,000 miles on it. I have had to start doing some expensive maintance and repairs. I need reliable transportation and last time I kept my car 10 years put a ton of money into it and ended up giving it away. I dont want to do that again. So at what year should I trade in for a new one? I own the mazda outright, no lease.
ANSWER: Jackie:Thanks for the question.Sometimes maintance costs can out weigh of keeping the car.My suggestion is to consider a certified or low mile car or truck(or suv)and save thousands of dollars in the process.New vehicles have better ride quality and better warranties.There is no time limit on when to buy a new car,that is personal choice.Good Luck!

QUESTION: Thank you for the information on the new car purchase, but I meant more when it the best point to sell my current vehicle. I know that at the 6 year point you will start to spend money on large maintain (timing belt) ect. But the car is worth something today as opposed to the same car being 10 years old. So what is the calculation that says you should sell/trade your current car at year 8 to get the most $$ in trade. I hope I explained it better to you, thanks again. I have always bought last years models that are on the lot but never driven or the model car that is in showroom. I have found I get a good price because they want to unload old stock for new and I get a new car with only me as the owner.
AnswerJackie:There is a calculation when to sell/trade your car.And yes, your car is worth something.The values of vehicles change each month.Each month the values get lower.(except more popular and more demanded vehicles).The reason I suggest low mile or certified (used) cars,your get lot for the money.Consider checking the Kelly or Nada guides to determine the your car values.Also buying a car should be a exciting,fun,and emotional experience.
