Tips on Buying Cars: Turning in a lease vehicle, chevy malibu, lease vehicle

Question
I have a leased Chevy Malibu and my left tail light is broken. I was looking into replacing it and was wondering if i could put a new style of tail lights on? I want to since it would be cheaper to buy a pair of them, then to buy the one standard one that came with it. please help before i do the wrong thing. Thanks Rachelle

Answer
Rachelle,

Thanks for your question.  You can do whatever you would like to the car!  Just understand that you will not get your money back when you turn your lease in at the end of your lease term.  They will not punish you as far as having a different set of tail lights on, unless those tail lights that you put on do not conform to inspection and state requirements.  You have the right to do anything you would like to a leased vehicle, but most people don't because they will never get the money back that they put into the vehicle when they turn it in.  Tail lights are not that expensive, so I don't know that I would worry about that in your case.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
