Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a car out of state, looking to buy a car, state of kansas

Question
I live in Kansas, but am currently in California for work and will be for quite some time.  Ive been looking to buy a car out here in California, but I want to get it tagged and registered at home.  Normally I'd have to drive it back to Kansas to have it inspected, tagged, etc, but I don't know when I would get a chance to take the week to get home and get that done.  Is there anyway I could get it tagged and registered without having to drive it all the way back, or I am stuck doing it that way?

Answer
Robert,

Thanks for your question.  Kansas's law states that the vehicle must have a registration for the state of Kansas to be legal.  It also states that it must uphold to the State of Kansas inspection and emission standards.  Since the State of California has such a high standard as any other state in our Country for emissions, you will pass easily, but it still must be done.  If I were you, I would just have it registered in California to the address where you reside, and then when you get a chance to get it back to Kansas, transfer the tags and inspection to that state. That is the easiest way without you having to go back to Kansas to get it done.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
