Tips on Buying Cars: milage, great used cars, high mileage

Question
QUESTION: when buying a used car that has high mileage..does it matter if it is highway or in town?which is better or worst?

ANSWER: Amber,

Good question. Well the old adage used to be highway miles were better and the mentality behind that was that the miles were from smooth steady driving not stop and go. Some people still feel like highway miles are better on a car and they may be. As far as the value goes miles are miles regardless of if they were put on driving the highway or the driveway they are still the same amount of miles.

I think what is important wen buying a used car is to always have it checked by a mechanic first. Run a Carfax report on it to help make sure it has a clean title etc. Go to kbb.com and get the trade-in and retail value on the car. Pay as close to trade-in as possible and never over retail. If your financing be smart and shop for a loan as well.

I hope this helps and feel free to ask me anything else! Do your research and be a smart buyer!

QUESTION: in your opion what kinds of cars are better then others....also what would be the avarage on mileage per year???

Answer
Amber,

Well it really depends on what range your looking in and what type as far as suv, coupe etc. Honda and Toyota are normally great used cars if they have been maintained properly. That does not mean domestics like Chevrolet, Ford etc are not. Just the first two have a better reputation for getting more miles.

Now as average per year, industry standards are between 12,000 and 15,000 per year. I would personally say closer to the 15,000 just because people drive more now then they did years ago. kbb.com, and many other sites out there are great to do your research at.

One other thing to remember as many people will recommend Honda, Toyota etc. if the car has not been properly maintained then the make does not matter it will tend to have more problems in the long run. Make sure to have any car your seriously considering checked by a mechanic. Ask if they have the service records for the car as that may shed some lite on how it has been maintained.

Good luck and feel free to ask anything else you may need.
