Tips on Buying Cars: water in starter, answer asap, finance contracts

Question
I have a friend that is purchasing a car. She test drove it yesterday and everything seemed fine. This morning it wouldnt start. It had been sitting on the lot at the dealership for some time, and when she called them, they said they must have gotten water in the starter when they took it in the shop to service it. Is this possible and how? I didnt think there was any way water could get in there.  It is a 2002 Chevy trailblazer. An answer asap would be appreciated as she is financing the car. THANKS!! Marsha

Answer
Hi Marsha; Sorry for the delay in response. I had computer issues. Anyway, "water in the starter" doesn't seem to be the correct diagnosis for this problem. The most common issue with cars on a dealer's lot is that they are usually started and moved a short distance without giving the battery time to fully charge. On top of that, customers tend to leave dome lights on etc., putting more strain on batteries. I would guess that the battery is in need of replacement, especially if it is original from 2002! I would advise your friend, that if she likes this vehicle, she should be certain that the service department repairs the problem before she gets the car. Be sure that they will stand behind that repair if the vehicle doesn't have any warranty. This will guard against any "quck fix" just to move the car off the lot! Another good idea is for your friend to purchase an extended warranty through the dealership. These extended warrantys can be added to the finance package so no cash will be needed out of pocket. These are always a good idea if you think the vehicle may have an issue. Be certain to make sure the battery and electrical systems are covered. Best of Luck and let me know if I can be of any further help. Thanks, Jim. P.S. Just a note, If your friend has already purchased the car and has signed the finance contracts, without a warranty, most dealerships and warranty companies will allow a number of days after the purchase to add the package. Check with the dealership and see.
