Tires: Switching From P to LT Tire Pressure Help
Door Placard 1
QUESTION: Hello.  I just bought the BFG All Terrain T/A KO2 tires and the one that fits my vehicle is Product Number 63681 - LT265/60R18/E 119S.  My vehicle is a 2008 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L V6 4x4 Limited Edition.  My vehicle manufacturer specified the tire size as P265/60R18 and says the cold tire pressure should be 32 PSI on the door placard.  Since the tires I bought are a LT E load range size and the tire pressure specified by Toyota is for a Passenger tire, what cold pressure should I fill the LT E load range tires to?  My vehicle's gross weight is 5580LBS(FRT 2550LBS + RR 3060LBS), curb weight is 4320LBS, maximum payload is 1260LBS, and maximum towing capacity is 5000LBS.  I don't really tow much at all so I am just looking for an optimal tire pressure that will keep the tires wearing evenly and handling/performing the way they are supposed to.  My main concern is the tires wearing evenly(related to air pressure).  Thank you for your time.

ANSWER: Dean,

In order to carry the same load a P265/60R18 does at 32 psi, an LT265/60R18 needs to use 47 psi.

QUESTION: Thank you very much Barry!  Is there a special formula to figure that out?  If so, would you please explain it to me so I can figure it out for myself in the future?

ANSWER: Dean,

It isn't complicated, but it does involve the use of tire load tables such as these:

http://toyotires.com/sites/default/files/page-files/LoadInflation_Table_P-LT_102

In fact, this Toyo pamphlet will walk you through how to do this.

- BUT -

These tables are copyrighted and can not be published without permission - and that means you may not find a table your exact size  However, I have up to date tables and I am willing to those calculations.

QUESTION: Thanks again Barry.  Last question, if I was going on a road trip and was going to add about 1000LBS-1200LBS to the weight of the vehicle between passengers and cargo, how much pressure should I add into the tires?  Also, would it be possible for you to send me the load inflation table that applies to me please?

Answer
Dean,

First, the vehicle tire placard pressure INCLUDES the worst possible condition, unless it states otherwise.  So if you aren't overloading the vehicle, that pressure will work.

If you ARE overloading the vehicle - get another vehicle.  There's a lot more involved in load than just tires.

But I think a few extra psi in tires is a good thing for long trips - say 3 to 5 psi.

And the load table?  Sorry, but my scanner isn't working.  I don't know exactly why - just that it doesn't want to communicate with the computer.
