Saab Repair: 94 Saab 900T clutch problem, clutch master cylinder, clutch pedal

Question
Hi Rick,

My car is a 94 Saab 900 turbo convertible (commemorative edition). Here's the problem: When I went out to start it, I depressed the clutch pedal and I heard a springing sound and since then have been unable to get any pressure or engagement with the clutch. Hence, I can't move the car at all...which is presenting a huge problem, as I have a very steep driveway and the driveway is situated such that a tow-truck wouldn't be able to get up and hook the car up for towing. So, I either need to know how to identify and fix the problem completely, or I need to find out how I can move the car and roll it down my driveway for a tow truck to access....and tow it somewhere to be fixed!

I spoke with someone who said he thought the clutch hydraulic cylinder might be low on fluid, but if I read my manual correctly, the brake fluid supplies that resevoir and I checked and I'm not low on brake fluid.

This is all very odd, as the last time I drove the car (a few days before I went out the start it and found it broken), there was no evidence of wear in the way the clutch was performing...it all seemed to be working well.

Any ideas? Your expertise is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve

Answer
Sounds like your clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder has failed. Why would you simply not let the car roll downhill? You should still be able to release the transmission into neutral by having the key turned....even if the engine is not running. I do not own a 900, but cannot imagine a car that cannot be moved if the clutch fails. You may not have power steering or brakes, but it should be manageable.
