Tires: Tires, tire placard, bbs rims

Question
Hi, I have a 2004 Toyota Camry, special edition with BBS rims. I have michelin 235/45-18 94v on my car now, but I was told that the 98y will give me better performance. Which one will be best for my car?

Answer
Linda,

Let's start iwth the basics:

On every vehicle sold in the US - and I understand this is a worldwide practice as well - there is a sticker – commonly called the vehicle tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

BTW, it doesn't matter who makes the tire or what pressure is listed on the tire's sidewall, if the tire size is the same as the placard, then the pressure listed on placard is also appropriate.

Tire Guides, a publication that summarizes vehicle tire placards, says that 2004 Toyota Camry's came in a variety of configurations with a variety of tire sizes, but none of them were 18".  But the load index on all of those was about 94 - and that means the 235/45R18 94V you have on their now are adequate for Load Index.

So why would someone tell you that a higher load index would give you better performance?  Better performance meaning what?

I think you haver adequate load carrying capacity and better performance would be obtained by careful selection of tires (meaning make and model).
