Tires: tires, tire placard, tire blowout

Question
I currently have a dodge 1500 truck with new tires(6mo.s old that have 275  55r20 117h xl max load of 2833lbs poy side walls . would you recommend replacing them with 6or 8 ply for carring a load of 1200lbs on the truck??.i currently have air bags and im concern of a tire blowout. What would be yr recommendation? leave the existing tires on it or replace with better tire.

Answer
Lonnie,

Pickup trucks have a built in payload capacity from the factory - and the original tires as indicated by on the vehicle tire placard would be included in the consideration of that capacity.  If you stay within the payload, then the original configuration does not need to be changed.

If I read this right, some Dodge 1500's came with P275/60R20 114S - which are a bit smaller in load carrying capacity than what you have on there now.

Also, Dodge seems to think that all its trucks have at least a 1,200# payload (you should check this for your particular version).

So I think that the current tire size has enough load carrying capacity - and the only thing you need to be aware of is that you need an Extra Load version - as well as using 41 psi for an inflation pressure.
