Tires: tires for 2004 alero, speedometer accuracy, www tirerack com wheels

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2004 alero which have 225/50/R16 tires. Can I use 205/70/R15 tires and rims?

ANSWER: Dear Mary,
Thank you for using AllExperts!
The original tires on your Alero would be 24.88" in overall diameter compared to 26.34" for the (P)205/70R15 tires, consequently the 205s would be too "tall" to consider as an acceptable replacement.  I cannot recommend them.
In addition, I cannot be sure that the wheels would properly fit your Alero which requires a 5 bolt-hole, 115mm bolt circle and a specific "offset" for your car (see description below).

QUESTION: The person who has them for sale said they came off an alero 2003

ANSWER: Dear Mary,
If the wheels came off a 2003 Alero, they should fit your 2004 model, however the 205/70R15 tires are still too large, and outside of the tire industry's generally acceptable limit for diameter difference.  This will adversely affect your odometer, speedometer accuracy and braking efficiency.  I do not see this size listed as an approved option for the 2003 or 2004 Alero.  My recommendations are always based on safety first and the proper functioninng of the vehicle as intended.

QUESTION: Is there any other size of winter tire that would fit except for 225/50/R16?

Answer
Dear Mary,
As 225/50R16 is the proper size for your car, are you having difficulty locating snow tires in this size locally?  I have checked three popular Internet sales sites and all three of them have a selection of snow tires in your size:
Discount Tire Direct
The Tire Rack
1010tires
Have you inquired if local dealer/retailers can special order this size for you?  I'm not sure if you are in Canada or the U.S.
