Tires: correct tire pressure for a 2000 cavalier, correct tire pressure, gm chevrolet

Question
Hello I need to know what the correct tire pressure is for my 2000 4 door cavalier Sedan. It is not listed anywhere,(door or anywhere else) but on the tire it does say that the maximum is 44 psi. Would it be okay to put 38 in the tires? I would love to know the correct tire pressure! I would greatly appreciate any help I can get with this. Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Julia,
Thank you for using AllExperts!
Although all tires show a maximum pressure (psi)on the sidewall, this pressure may not have any relation the the correct psi for your car, as specified by your vehicle manufacturer.  My records show three tire options for the 2000 Cavalier:
P195/70R14 90S Cavalier
P196/65R15 89S LS model
P205/55R16 89H Z24 model
There may be others.  Each of these original tire fitments specified 30 psi (front tires), and 30 psi (rear tires).  This was what GM/Chevrolet recommended for the Cavalier.  If your car has a different size tire than the above listings, the 30/30 psi recommendation may NOT apply(re-contact me). You may want to check your vehicle owner's manual to see if it includes the original tire size and air pressure recommendation.  If your current tire size matches the above sizes, put 30 psi in all the tires; 38 psi would be too much air.
