Tires: tire options pt2, tire placard, passenger tire

QUESTION: Hi Barry,
I couldn't do a follow up so I had to enter a new question which is actually a follow up.
When I went on line to purchase tires for my truck I was given 2 options of sizes 1.)LT245/75/16 which is on my placard on the door. The 2nd option was a passenger tire 235/65/17

I had LT245/75/16 on my truck but I chose to put on the m+s 235/65/17 tire on my F150 because I don't really use it for hauling or towing I thought I would save a few $$. The new m+s 235/65/17 tires were put on my existing rims which had the LT245/75/16. So now I see a bit of rim overhang that i tried to show with my picture. I wondering if this was of concern, and if my speedometer was going to be affected, or there were any other ramifications. hopefully this clarify's my question.

ANSWER: Tom,

First, you could NOT have put P235/65R17's on your truck because that tire is a 17" tire - meaning it requires a 17" rim.  The original tires on your truck are 16"  (LT245/75R16)  16" tires only go on 16" rims and 17" tires only go on 17" rim

- AND -

It is almost inconcievable that any tire shop would confuse the 2.  I have done this once and it is painfully obvious.

This at least makes sense from the point of view of what I can see of the tirte size in the photo - which is why I asked you to actually look at what the tire size is on the truck now.  So please do that because anything you've said concerning the 17" tire is obvious not applicable - you have 16" tires on the truck - the question is what size are they?

Also, did you order tires on line or go to a store?  If you went to a store immediately go back to that store, point to the vehicle tire placard, and point to the tires and tell them "They aren't the same size.  Why not?".

QUESTION: Barry I owe you an apology! I did give you the wrong tire size. Placard says LT245/75/16 I put on 235/70/16. is there any concerns/differences that i should be aware of?

The 235/75/17 were for my other vehicle.

Answer
Tom,

We are now making progress.

First, a P235/70R16 is way too small for your truck.

If Tire Guides, a book that summarizes the vehicle tire placard, is to be believed, your placard should say the original tire pressures were 45 psi front / 60 psi rear.  That means the front tires are capable of handling 2030# and the rears 2480# (at the pressures specified.

A P235/70R16 has a maximum load carrying capacity of 1804#.  That's a total loss of load carrying capacity of over 1800#!!

Did you order the tires on-line or did you purchase them at a local tire shop?
