Tires: Tire Sidewall Ripple, tire sidewall, bulges

Question
I have a relatively new set of tires on my van (~4-5,000 miles).  I've noticed along the sidewall there are 2-3 "ripples" on all four tires.  Near the tire tread, a few of the rippled almost become "dimples".  The ripples are hard to see looking straight on, but looking at an angle they are easy to see.  The ripples travel across the sidewall (like spokes on a wheel).

Answer
Julie,

Those are normal and in fact are the strongest part of the tire.

They are called indentations.  They are caused by the overlap of the ply fabric during the building in the tire.  There will be at least one for every ply as indicating on the sidewall for "sidewall plies" - and usually 2 per ply.

When the tire is inflated, the fact that there is an extra layer means the pressure doesn't expand that part as much.

If they were bulges, that would be a concern.
