Tires: Tire Failure, tire failure, inflation pressure

Question
Tires: Tire Failure, tire failure, inflation pressure
Tire Pics
I recently had a tire failure on a boat trailer, and am trying to determine the cause.  The failure occurred on the freeway traveling ~50mph.  The tire remained inflated and I was able to pull to the side quickly and easily.  I did not see or feel any road hazards.  Upon examination of the tire, I found excessive wear on the outside edges of the tire, where the failure occurred.  I have attached a picture of the failed tire.  Could this failure have occurred do to the excessive wear on the tire, or is another cause more likely.
Thanks,
JN

Answer
Joel,

It is just impossible to do a failure analysis based on a photographs.  There are many, many factors that can contribute to a failure and sorting them out can be very difficult.

I hope you also realize that in order to be descriptive of a tire failure, one must know what to photograph.  I'm sorry, but I can not even see the wear clearly enough to determine if the wear is 360° around the tire, or localized.

So let's start with the basics:

1)  What is the tire size?

2)  What vehicle is it on?  I can tell it is a trailer.

3)  What inflation pressure was the tire operating at?

4)  What is the make and model of the tire?

5)  How old is the tire?

I am sure there is a story behind this.  I might be able to help you if I know the background and what has happened to this point.
