Tires: XL tire in front and SL rear, tire placard, doorpost

Question
Hi,

Is that correct to put XL tire in front and SL tire in rear. In front I have 225/45/17 and in rear 245/45/17. For Potenza RE760 thez don't have standard load rating for the front size. May I look for other tire that have all four the same load rating?

Regards,

Answer
Dominque,

The general rule is to put the best tires on the rear - but there are some exceptions and you may have one of them.  But let's start with the basics:

On every vehicle sold in the US, there is a sticker – commonly called the tire placard - that lists the original tire size and the proper pressure for that size.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.

BTW, it doesn't matter who makes the tire or what pressure is listed on the tire's sidewall, if the tire size is the same as the placard, then the pressure listed on placard is also appropriate.

So does your vehicle placard show the tire sizes as you listed?

If I had to guess, I would say: "NO!".  It would be very unusual to have that combination on a vehicle.  And if I am correct that this does not match the vehicle tire placard, then the problems could be much bigger.

So let's start there, and if the tires match the placard, there isn't an issue.  but if they don't post back with the information on the vehicle tire placard - size and pressure - and I'll continue down the path.
