Tires: Hot Smell and Extreme Vibration after Tire Rotation, extreme vibration, clould

Question
Immediately after tire rotation at 45 mph on freeway steering wheel has extreme shaking and there is a hot smell, like burning rubber. I take it back and am told 1. the tires were not balanced after rotation and that they were way off balance, and(2)the hot smell must have come from a mechanical problem. I never had that problem before and am concerned that the failure to balance the tires caused other damage to my vehicle and they are covering up any damage that occured from not balanceing the tires. Also, what if they did not tighten all the lug nuts down on one tire, clould that have caused the hot smell and caused damage to other parts of the vehicle?

Answer
Bill,

The hot smell was not related to the tire rotation - except to say that perhaps the rotation caused something to drop onto the brake parts.  Put another way, anything that someone might screw up in a tire rotation would have resulted in another type of symptom and not a smell.
